Michael Gordon
Composer | Collaborative Innovator | Orchestral Visionary | Bang on a Can Co-Founder
Michael Gordon is a composer known for building immersive musical experiences that bring together rhythmic invention, sonic intensity, and a strong collaborative spirit. Over more than 30 years, he has created works for ensembles, orchestra, film, theater, opera, dance, and recording, with projects ranging from Travel Guide to Nicaragua and Field of Vision to long-running collaborations with Kronos Quartet, Maya Beiser, Bill Morrison, and Ridge Theater.
His work includes orchestral pieces such as Natural History, Observations on Air, The Unchanging Sea, and Weather; interdisciplinary works including Decasia, Gotham, and Dystopia; and chamber and percussion works such as Potassium, Trance, and Timber. Gordon is co-founder and co-artistic director of Bang on a Can and has received commissions and honors from major cultural institutions in the United States and abroad.
